Safety
Safety Rules
Our range safety rules apply at every event, without exception. Please read and understand them before attending.
The Four Fundamental Rules
These are not our rules — they are the universal rules of firearm safety that apply everywhere, always:
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Even if you just checked it yourself. Even if someone else tells you it’s clear.
- Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot. Finger outside the trigger guard, indexed along the frame.
- Know your target and what is beyond it. A bullet does not stop at the target.
Unsafe gun handling at any AMGC event is grounds for immediate removal. There are no warnings for violations of the four rules.
Event-Specific Rules
Range Commands
All participants must comply immediately with range commands:
- “Cease fire” — stop shooting immediately, finger off trigger, muzzle downrange
- “Range is cold” — firearms grounded, actions open, everyone steps back from the line
- “Range is hot” — shooting may resume when you are ready
Required Equipment
- Eye protection is required at all times on an active range — prescription glasses count
- Ear protection is required at all times when shooting is active
- Closed-toe shoes are required
Handling
- Firearms are transported to and from the range unloaded and cased
- No handling of firearms while anyone is downrange
- Holstered carry is welcome for those who carry — drawing from a holster is a separate activity and must be coordinated with event organizers in advance
Alcohol & Impairment
Firearms and alcohol do not mix. Anyone who appears impaired at an event will be asked to leave and will not handle firearms. This is non-negotiable.
Guests & First-Timers
New attendees will be greeted by a member and given a quick walkthrough before the event begins. Don’t hesitate to ask questions — there are none too basic.
If you are bringing a firearm to your first event, let us know in advance so we can make sure you have what you need and answer any questions ahead of time.
A Note on Safe Storage
We strongly encourage all members to follow best practices for home safe storage of firearms, especially in households with children. Resources:
